There is enormous interest in the Brown Trout, whether you are a fly fisher or you troll plugs waiting for the strike of the predator. I have never soley focused on brown trout but have always marveled at their beauty and teeth when I have been fortuanate enough to make their acquaintance…mostly on stillwaters. I find it inviting to work baitfish imitations for the browns, especially early or late in the season, when they seem more aggressive in shallower waters and the big ones come in from the depths to hunt. I have found most any baitfish or larger Woolly Bugger will entice a strike..with presentation being more important than exact imitation. I have seen lines from floating to Type III working, but depending upon water depth, I prefer a clear Intermediate in water less than 10′ deep. I really need to eventually venture to the rivers that Browns inhabit and learn to work streamers and the like through the holding waters. In short, I have much more to learn, away from the lakes, re these prized fish. If you have any suggestions of Western US rivers that are user friendly for the novice or worthy patterns let me know. I will share what I learn. I receive many queries re Brown Trout, so for you seekers of the profound re BT, I apologize for not having something new to share…just yet.
