I was killing time and watching a Sundance Channel movie…one of those ‘et’s expand your world view’ movies: Travelers and Magicians (2003). The story line is one of modern v. tradition; subplots of infidelity and murder, etc. But, the scenery in the Bhutan mountains was akin to the Western US/B.C. (my only reference point). Beautiful streams and forests. So, I did a little looking and found brown trout were introduced into the streams almost a hundred years ago and have taken hold along with another species called ‘snow trout’, a white fish or carp like fish suited to freestone enviornments. I am not promoting the movie..it was ok for a ‘love triangle’, but it did provide the incentive to research a beautiful enviornment and once again fly fishing opportunities abound around the world.

If you can find a copy of the Australian fly fishing TV series “A River Somewhere” they actually filmed an episode in Bhutan. Looked very pretty, lots of smallish browns in fast water, from what they found. Beautiful scenery.
The series was a major prime time hit in Australia, and had the same impact on ff as “the Movie” did over here. 8pm Thursday nights on a major network. It was the project of 2 comedians who had a number of hit shows prior to “A River”, Tom Gleisner and Rob Sitch.
It was all shot on film very glossy some great destinations, Los Roques, NZ twice, Snowy Mountain in Oz twice, Great Barrier Reef, Italy, British chalkstreams and Scottish salmon fishing. Its mainstream success was due to the humor, scenery and the fact most of the show was on the journey rather than the fly fishing.
Great show.
Cheers
