May is right around the corner…kind of. I know some avid Deschutes R. explorers. I noted one of them last year with four calf tails in hand at a local shop and noticed the pinkish-tan hue of the tails. They had been special ordered for what? No response. You know the scenario…the pause, the weighing of whether to give up some ‘secret’ or is it really a ‘secret’…the ‘oh what the hell’ head nod, and I learned the calf tails were for tying a Norm Wood Special. The adult stonefly pattern is like a Sofa Pillow or Stimulator, but the wing is calf tail. The fly floats flush in the film. Does the pinkish-tan color make a difference? It wasn’t the first time this Deschutes R. visitor had tied the pattern….so,apparently so.
