This is a great lake pattern and although I have shown it before, I did not take the flies I tied and put them in the lake boxes. I came upon a dozen stuck away in an empty hook box. Into the fly box they go for any emerging Callibaetis mayflies. Timberline Emerger

Fly Tying: Timberline Emerger Pattern for Stillwaters

So with this pattern, how do you fish it? Deep or stripped or ?

As an emerger pattern, I would fish it during an obvious hatch, or pre hatch if you know the general timing. It should be fished in the surface film or below the surface and slowly. As with any presentation, give some thought to how the natural insect is behaving and mimic as best you can. Study how mayflies move from the depths to and through the surface and fish accordingly…. An Intermediate Line or Floating Line would work. Keep the fly in the top few feet of water, so as much as I most often use an Intermediate Line…this is a good time to fish a Floating Line. Hope this helps.

I see this as a usefull pattern this time of year. It is easy to tie, easy to use, and quite successful! I also use this pattern with a bit of a different recipe for later in the July waters. I place a piece if silver flash to account for the brighter sunlight. I have gad great success with it.
I like the website, I like the articles, and will be a frequent visitor. A mutual friend told me I would like your site being as I am a fly fisher gal. she is right!

I like this pattern very much, and these are well-done.
Have you always sported a goatee? I look ridiculous in one, and my wife seriously dislikes it. I am jealous.

The Timberline is indeed a good fly. My goatee…no it is an infrequent thing: itchy, makes me look like an old billy goat, my wife hates it. I mowed today and after the effort in humid conditions I was itching. I have had to wear a dust mask quite a bit of late….itchy….what the hell. I don’t know. I was going to opt for a ‘stache but was told I’d look like an old porn star. Verdicts out Tak. As always, thanks for visiting.
