i live in state with western water and trespass laws. if it’s not yours you don’t belong there without permission. no posting, no right of trespass except on streams and rivers where flows are blocked (even then you could still get shot at). most of the time i like that just fine.
the state and feds have declared waters navigable, locally. more in the interest of nailing down property boundaries (lots of floods).
i have about 1/2 of a mile of stream meandering through my ground. just minnows, frogs, turtles, snakes, deer, turkeys, herons, ducks, coyotes, bobcats, maybe a mountain lion, neighbor kids, meth heads, poachers and partiers. it’s the last three components of the ecological structure that raise concerns.
when i spent a lot of time knocking on doors asking for hunting or fishing access, i was kinda offended by some of the reactions i got. after all, i’m a nice guy, right? but since i’ve had my place i understand it a bit better. it’s hard enough when you can allow access on the basis of your judgement, but access to everyone? that’s pretty hard to live with.

Gary,
Thanks for the heads up on this one. The stream access issue here is just one never ending battle these days.
