We hear that the Florida Everglades are beset by various harms. One is the release of pythons into the wilds by stupid ‘pet’ owners. The importation and sale of such non-native species must stop!

Also, check out FeyGirl at Serentiy Spell and her very nice photographs of Florida wildlife and the Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area.

florida is home to a huge number of “exotic” pet importers. it has an ecology not unlike the origin of many of the creatures that come there. so if they end up free, they thrive.
the uptick in global warmth allows the spread of these species northward.
if you think the constrictors are the largest problem then technically you’d be correct. however the everglades is rumored to have a viable population of cobras as well.
a look at the herp magazines will shock the uninformed. there isn’t much you can’t get.
the only balance to this is the export of snapping turtles and our vipers to places that they will soon overrun.

Funny how so many animals around the world are causing contoversial concern from the population explosion and destruction of the natural ecology where almost no one has taken a look in the mirror while thinking of this…

You pick your concern and please do something about it. On this blog, you will see concerns about man’s abuse of rivers and oceans, forests, and in this instance, the Everglades via released ‘pets’. Population densities, deforestation, etc. etc. etc. For most people on this blog, myself included, we tend to concern ourselves with habitat for wildlife (indirectly mankind), mining and timber harvesting.

Wow, that is amazing. I will forward all of this to my parents who live in Florida part time and are avid birdwatchers and concerned about the natural environment there and everywhere.
