which during a drought and 85 degree (before sunup) mornings has been a surprise.
they eschewed the poppers and gurglers i was using for bass and gar.
but they were running fry to the surface like white bass do.
so…i tied up some squirrel tail charlies in size 8 (eagle claw L042) and threw them.
they are even sparser than clousers, so they cast easily on 4 and 5 weight rods. are big enough to discourage the nibblers. not very splashy on entry, so if you cast to carp they won’t sppok as readily.
anyway…the first day i got into a cluster of active feeders and took a dozen or so crappie in about thirty minutes. the sun got high enough that fish went down and i just picked up a couple stragglers during the next hour.
thursday the dogs wanted to go kill a raccoon at 4:30. let ’em out to wake the neighbors and drive our furry bandit and her brood out of the garden. loaded up the truck and was fishing by 5:15. took a couple of bass in the dark. just worked the shore picking up bass as i went. just at sunup the crappie were working again. started casting to their boils. the fish seem to take the charlie on entry or as you stop it before another roll cast. over ther next three hours took a dozen bass, a couple of dozen crappie, a carp and a red ear slider.
as i headed home the radio said it was 93 already. we usually don’t get this until mid to late august.
not a bad day and i hadn’t had my first cup of coffee yet.
I’ve said it before…I sure hope you express that wit and writing ability beyond the comment sections of blogs and in memo’s at work! You really know how to turn a phrase or two!
