I am always fascinated by the unique shapes found in nature off the beaten path. Was this hole caused by man in some logging or mining operation along this remote stretch of stream? Was it a result of volcanic activity or some erosional influence when the rock was vulnerable? Some might even think there is some underworld/other world influence here…a window toward faeries. Above is a hole in a rock in a remote spot along a stream. It captures the imagination for long enough to snap a photo.

When there is a small crack in the rock, another small rock finds the crack in the rushing of the water of the stream. It then rattles around in the crack for a while causing the crack to round out a little before the rock wears down, gets swept away and replaced with a new larger rock. With the rushing water, the larger rock spins around and rounds out the crack a little more and gets smaller in the process until it, too, is replaced. The crack transforms into a hole, becoming larger and larger with ever passing rock that finds it. The rush of water gives the needed motion, and the persistence over years creates a smooth rounded hole.
