Ostrich Herl can be used for the tail, legs, abdomen/gills, thorax, wing case or antenna on various patterns. It pulses, waves and shimmies. It is fairly durable too. Yes, I am experimenting with various photo backgrounds for the fun of it.

Ostrich Herl For Fly Tying

Much underutilised material in my opinion and great for myrian uses. American anglers may not be familiar with Richard Walker’s “Chomper series” of flies tied in various colours of ostrich herl and great on many stillwaters. If you haven’t seen the chompers previously you may enjoy doing an internet search for them. Very simple and deadly.

I will research them. Thanks for the new direction Tim. In already looking, I see the backstrap over the top is either coated or left natural. I nice looking little fly! I like it.
