My name is Amanda Milster and I am with the Endangered Species Coalition. I discovered your blog and I wanted to contact you to see if you might be interested in writing a post about an issue that we have been working on. We are very concerned about the federal proposal to remove Endangered Species Act protections from wolves and are trying to get the word out as much as possible. Patagonia, Black Diamond, Dansko and several other companies just publicly released a statement against the federal proposal as part of the public comment period. These businesses are concerned about the economic implications of losing gray wolves, as they have a major positive impact on outdoor recreation and tourism revenues. We’ve heard strong arguments for protecting wolves from sportsmen, scientists, and conservationists, but this strong statement by business leaders is very important, as it shows a new side of the argument. Sorry that this is a strange way to contact you.
There were also 1 million comments from the public against this delisting submitted. When the comment period ended on Tuesday, we held a candlelight vigil directly outside of the Department of the Interior as we delivered all of these comments to the building. We were also able to work with another organization, the Illuminator, to project a message directly onto the building urging Secretary Jewell to protect wolves. We worked with a photographer and have great photos from the event. I would be more than happy to talk about this further with you. We also have press releases available about the delisting proposal. I can send them your way if you’re interested!
Thank you Amanda for reaching out re the Wolf preservation issue. I would be happy to receive materials to further study up on this issue. I have mixed thoughts re this issue…and admit I have not deeply delved into the various arguments. Rancher’s livestock concerns in Eastern Oregon are raised and of interest to me. Also, hunting them to just hunt them does seem inappropriate. All that said…I need to know more with balanced input.
Another year over work finished for 14 whole days students now dispersed throughout the UK and beyond, bless’em.
All the best to you and yours SwittersB long may you wonderful blog continue
