Henceforth I ask not good fortune ~ I myself am good fortune;
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Strong and content, I travel the open road.

A new year and an open road. What more could we ask! No conifers where I live now, but I grew up seeing pine forests all around. Eons ago. 🙂

Love this…where is it? It reminds me of where I grew up each summer on the Grande Ronde…and the small creek Beaver Creek.

Not quite that far..it is a road that runs out off Hwy 26 just east of Prineville and runs by a very small spot called Howard. Nearby is a very small graveyard and in it a great NW writer…Gale Ontko is buried (Thunder Over the Ochoco series). The road was headed back toward Hwy 26 and then we were headed up to Mitchell-Dayville.

Oh well you know it very well and you must someday acquire Ontko’s works because you live in the heart of it all. Also, I have not so fond recollections of being down in the South Fk. of the Crooked…yikes…snakes!

We killed 35 rattlesnakes in six weeks on 450 acres of irrigated ground along the Crooked River….creepy. We had two kinds…the low land ones along the bottom close to the river were huge rattlesnakes, like 6′ plus ones…so I thought oh good the first time I rode for cattle up in the Murry Mts. up behind the ranch, I thought who hoo no snakes….wrong…in the timber theyhave timber rattlers that are very fat an coil around branches in the trees….and the one place I stopped on the trail, I had one coiling under my horse. I was lucky as someone yelled move and my horse who was not used to snakes, luckily she did not sense it, moved fast…we sort of hopped high and one of the cowboys shot it. Be aware as they were all around us.
