At the Badger Flyfishers’ Spring Opemer last Saturday I saw a BWO emerger with a “marabou” tail made from a feather from the very top of the head of a bobwhite quail: “mini-maribou”.
I bet that added excellent life to the small pattern. Even the smaller Chickabou feathers are nice for mid size flies and the very small tuffs of hackle at the lower end of the hackle stem that are often discarded can be plucked off, trimmed up and tied in for a mini-marabou like effect.
I love using marabou makes for excellent movement action in that water. That is a great looking fly.
