As so often happens with me, and maybe you too, I take a photograph because of some impulse. I usually don’t have an in depth understanding of what I am photographing: rocks, trees, plants, animals. The above image was taken because the blooms were pretty and the tree was in a fairly desolate spot with little else around sporting green. I had no idea what kind of tree it was. A little research reveals it was a mesquite tree. To certain Native Americans, it was a sacred tree used for many purposes and even their seasons were named after the yearly evolution of the mesquite tree. (more)

I grew up reading Zane Grey westerns… He wrote so descriptively about the landscape, fauna and flora. Thanks to you I now know what a mesquite tree actually looks like – cheers Mr Switters!

Indeed! I remember reading and re-reading about his fishing adventures around the world – he and his contemporaries were the pioneers of deep sea fishing, with cane rods and braided lines, unbelievable adventures.
