I had some time the other day to take some macro shots of some patterns I had tied some time ago. I wasn’t home with the usual setup. I set up on a dusty table and snapped away. The shots were blurry. I found myself hunched over looking into the camera while looking over the top of my glasses and nothing ever looked crisp. We are so dependent on our eyesight. Now it seems like adjust the lens and hope for the best. Kind of like it always it…but more so now. The fly patterns shown are: Stimulator (UL), Green Caddis Pupa (UR), Little Brown Stone (LL), Callibaetis Mayfly Nymph (LR).

Very good post! We are linking to this great post on our

since I’ve had to use trifocals for awhile I have found close-up work to be a bit tedious as well.
try skipping the use of your glasses altogether and adjust your diopter for the naked eye.
or…use a single vision lens of whatever correction works for you, adjust your diopter and go from there.
the only downside to this is your viewfinder may appear blurry to other shooters.
nice shots as always.

I should have asked beforehand…do you focus through the viewfinder or use “live view”?

I focus through the viewfinder, hunched over, squinting etc. I had never inspected ‘live view’….thanks to you I have something else to explore: http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/04/24/master-live-view-on-your-canon-dslr/
I will give it more time tomorrow…if you think it is an advantage.
Thanks as always.

I don’t personally, but there is a whole world of different opinion.
neither of my mirrorless cameras have EVFs or OVFs. hence the exposure to “live view”. they also both use contrast detection for autofocus. what that means is my defective eyes work awful hard to do good closeup work through a three inch LCD.
I much prefer to use the viewfinder on my DSLRs.
if you play with “live view”, see if your system has focus peaking options. it can make a difference.
on a side note…I picked up a Nikon aw110 the other day. it uses wifi to talk to an android app. so I can get a 5 or 7 or 10 inch “live view”. some of the newer canikons can display through a monitor or device. more crap between you and the picture but in a static environment it might be an option.
anyway, have fun!
