May I ask where you fish? My Pa was a big fisherman all his life and that headline caught my attention and I love the dime reference. Is that a beetle on the second lure?

That is nice about your father…I hope you went with him once or twice for memories. The second fly on the dime is a nymph pattern…an insect that lives below the surface before growing into an emerging adult that rises or crawls out of the water to become an adult. Most fish consume mostly nymphs compared to adults. In this instance it is a Callibaetis Nymph representing a mayfly nymph that is found in some lakes.

I did and my girl fishes as well! She said it makes her feel closer to Gpa! She also deer hunts! She’s my camo girl! Do you catch the nymph? How do you catch them? With a net?

Well you catch the fish of course with an imitation of the nymph. You and others can study the insects and life forms subsurface then you attempt to closely match the life forms that fish eat…you seduce them into taking a bite of an artificial creation. The fly tying is part of the fun of creating morsels that may interest fish. As for how you ‘catch’ the nymph to study it: a small net or kick seine is one method. You can turn over rocks or pull vegetation up from a stream bottom and often see movement of many types of critters. Or you can check out the sites of other more diligent researchers who find and photograph the various insects and terrestrials like here at Troutnut: http://www.troutnut.com/hatch/12/Insect-Trichoptera-Caddisflies.

troutnut! Speaking of troutnuts….my Pa moved to Colorado in the 1996 and loved fishing his fav trout stream. When I visited him he drove hi 4WD literally into the stream and stopped opened up his door and said, “Micki open up your door right there is where I caught the biggest trout I’ve ever seen.” I believed him instantly, my Pa always did stuff like that. If I said the water felt cold he pushed me in. Ya I never fished real close to him. LOL thank you for putting up with my silly questions. I sure miss my Pa, especially when the weather gets warmer. Well always but you know what i mean. 😀 night
