If you have been considering fly tying please take a look at Tim’s excellent site. If you already fly fish, but don’t tie your own flies, you must consider tying your own creations to fully enhance your fishing experience…nothing like catching fish with your own creations!

Hey Gary thanks for the link much appreciated, fly fishing and fly tying can be so much fun and bring so much enjoyment, particularly if we don’t take it all too seriously. But yes to my mind, I don’t care how long someone has fly fished, if they don’t tie their own flies, well they are beginners.. 🙂

I’ve always wanted to learn to fly fish—I love to fish as we have a boat so we do a lot of freshwater fishing and my husband likes to deep sea fish every now and then—but there seems something special about standing waist deep in a secluded stream, gently waving a line and fly back and forth—it also help that I love trout—nothing like a freshly grilled mountain brook trout. . .
Being the art teacher, I’ve always been drawn to wanting to make my own flies—the meticulous art involved in the creating process seems to draw me in. . .
Maybe one day I will heed the call of the trout 🙂

Fly fishing is a simple or as complicated as one wants to make it. Lakes, streams, rivers are great for fly fishing under the right circumstances. Sometimes gear is the only reasonable way to go and other times fly fishing outshines, hardware & bait. Fly tying leans heavily upon steps, imagination, understanding the habitat of insects and other food sources, and the discerning eye of an artist. I taught classes for some eight years and often women were excellent students of the ‘art’. I usually don’t kill trout but brookies to taste excellent from a mountain lake for sure!

I think you will enjoy Tim’s perspectives. The whole of South African fly fishing is a bit different and innovative. Patterns are often different, but highly successful.
