This pattern was originally tied for saltwater species. I have not altered the pattern’s makeup but you can readily see the possibilites with green or reddish tones in the feathers. I have only used this at Oregon’s East Lake searching deep for Browns. I had a modicum of success but with smaller 14-18″ browns. I am eager to strip this through the shallows in September, October and June. I have used Mallard, Teal or Gadwall with the hackles. Keep the flashabou or krystal flash the same general color as the tail feathers. It would be interesting to replance the squirrel wing with Pheasant feathers laid in full length and perhaps experiment with different colored eyes. As always, flytying lends itself to experimentation. As this pattern sets, it is a lively, attractive pattern. It casts well with 4-6 wt. rods. It is durable, but the tinsel does suffer a bit from teeth. Darn!

I should have also mentioned that I reference someone else’s ties when they can be attributed..like the beautiful Romanian patterns. So, those are not mine…I highlight the photography of others that, I believe, enhances the ability to tie better fly patterns.

The flies are most often ones I have tied. I have tied for approx. 30 years and tie infrequently, usually in the Spring getting ready for Trout or Steelhead. I like your site so far. You mentioned larger pics..that would be good. Also, not sure what camera you are using. I have tried to constantly improve my shots and have much to learn re F stop/Aperture etc. Very frustrating. But, try to get a clear pic and closer. Also, download pics and at least use Microsoft Picture Manager or Picasa to touch up pics. I can’t afford Photoshop so try to take a better pic but not there yet. Best wishes with your site and don’t quit. Become the expert on your area…highlight other blogs and keep it fun.

Hola, I fish in the driftless area of Minnesota. Some smaller fish here but a challenge none the less. I’m just learning. Your pictures are they of flies you have tied?
