Ah, a year ago I was feeling relaxed heading into Thanksgiving and giddy with anticipation for my planned trip-adventure for me-to Christmas Island. A lightning fast year has eased by, again reminding me of life’s fleeting journey and the resultant prompt to get busy and get out there. There is a gnawing irritant in you when you reach a certain age. Not just the urge to fish when you are young and the need to attain ‘the moment’, no this is more of a calculation that time is passing by too fast, and there are so many non-fishing duties (life for good or bad) and how will I get out there with the remaining years of health I possess? It is not a morose thought process, more like anxiety of organizing and prioritizing against life’s demands to get more done on the water…for me. Is that confusing? I think if you are on the other side of 60, you understand.
So, no warmth, no warm wind, no blinding light, no depth perception from never ending sky and the odd gradient of the flat. I was fortuanate to enjoy that trip. Pretty extravagant for me. This Winter, I will venture forth to cold, freezing mornings on rivers. Spey rod techniques will be in the forefront. Damn cold fingers, frozen snot and pre-hypothermic stumbling will mark the day. Geez that sounds fun. I need to hold that chrome bright muscled steelhead that I have worked so hard for. Time is fleeting.

Clive,
I am not positive where you live (ontario or ?)but, given that you have done Cuba, I’d say Canada. You might try Belize, Bahamas, etc. Closer, cheaper, easier bone, permit fishing. A lot easier on the pocket book. I have friends that travel a bit and have done both…they prefer Carib. File away for the tour!!!

It sure looks beautiful there. I’ll have to add it to my list of places to fishing on the Fishing Fury World Tour when I’m rich – HAH!
I love the idea of an Alaska expedition, but those white sand beaches in the south have a strong hold on me.

Hello Clive,
Prices may vary now for two reasons: airfare and more expensive accommodations on Christmas Is./Kiritimati. Since I was there, I think the Mini may have closed or has greater competition from at least 3 new spots to stay. There air is the most expensive portion of the trip. I don’t have the exact costs handy, but I would estimate the baisc costs of air/room/guides/gear was $4000. Because I am primarily a freshwater fisher, I had to buy a greater amount of saltwater gear (bonefish lines, spare spools, size 12 rod/reel to match for Trevally, clothes) I spent more than I thought I would have to. For me, this was an extravagant trip. I was asked and I thought, well why not, not realizing what I was getting into. I was lucky to get to go. My preference would probably have been Alaska for rainbows, upper B.C. for Steelhead, or who knows. I have time left. I grew blue collar, so that kind of money isn’t easily parted with…I have friends that went to Christmas this past April, that I could ask about newer accomodations if you or someone is interested.

Well, it could be worse! How much does a trip to Christmas Island cost anyway?
