- Mikael Frodin, by Jerome Philipon
“In Scandinavia the man is revered as a semi god, an expert fly tyer and leading salmon angler who together with Håkan Norling spearheaded the development of modern salmon tube flies. Both temple dogs and cone head tubes have now become an essential ingredient in the serious salmon angler’s box.”
“When tying, his view is the one of the fish and his first piece of advise is to look at the fly from underneath as well as sideways, exactly like a salmon would do. Mickael likes his tube wings wide and U-shaped. The wing should sit flat and round the two sides of the shank rather than just seat on top the tube. Only the underneath of the tube is left clear of any winging material.”
“A Turbo Disc creates a turbulence equivalent to ten times its surface bringing to life even the softest of materials…. Temple dog hair has his preference because the curly hair at its base provides volume whilst the tip are straight enough to deliver the required slim wing profile. Arctic fox tends to be curly and has excessive guard hair.”

I have had difficulty gluing the plastic tubes together for the bodies of the turbo disc flies. I have tried several types of crazy glue with only mediocre results. Any recommendations for the type of glue to use or tips for getting the tubes to stick together?

In checking with my son and associates, they use Zap-a-Gap, Gorilla Glue or Gator Glue combined with thread wraps, the flies don’t separate for them. I was also advised the glue needs to be pliable, not brittle. Hopefully, someone else will comment here and provide assistance or clarity.

Jim….I did receive a comment off blog that with the FITS system you may want to sometimes skip a size of tube…so a Med would go with an XL, and skip the L. My example of sizing, but you should watch for that skipping a size. Was a recommendation from someone that plays with the FITS tubes.

I have used the turbo-cones to tie salt water flies with soft materials for flats fishing in Texas for Redfish and found them to be very effective. Wondered if you have any suggestions.
