*Spring Caddis on the Rio Grande*

“The spring Caddis hatch is an annual event that begins in mid-April in the Pilar area and progresses slowly upstream. April is also the start of spring run-off and in most years the two events are simultaneous. In years when the run-off is late due to cooler than normal weather, or when lack of high mountain snow pack (Spring 2000?) makes for minimal runoff, some excellent dry fly fishing can be had.

This is a “blanket” hatch with millions of bugs literally blanketing the water. The key is to stay on the leading edge of the hatch as it works it’s way upstream into the Taos box.”

Perhaps New Mexico is overshadowed by Colorado’s fishing in the minds of many. However, for those in the know and able to venture there, New Mexico not only holds unique and amazing natural beauty but large, beautiful trout. The best known to most fly fishers, who don’t reside or fish NM, is the San Juan River. And, we’ve heard of the Rio Grande, but I must confess I was not aware of a healthy fishery in the Rio Grande. The Pecos, Jemez, Chama and the Red Rivers are but a few that host one or another of the trout: Rainbow, Brook, Cutt-Bows, Cutthroat and big Browns.

All patterns suitable for tailwater and free flowing rivers apply here. Runoff is a spring time event, like on most streams of the West. This can affect some hatches (Spring Caddis) availability to anglers. Otherwise, streams are flowing and fishable through October.

December 30, 2008 / Brazos River
“Our new lab/golden Lucy watches patiently while nick plays a nice fish on the Brazos. This location is so remote and exotic that you would think you were on fishing trip out of the US. This place is so far in the mountains that it is an overnight trip with lodging at the ranch. The fishing is excellent with rainbows up to 25 inches possible on dries–and some nice brook trout as well. If you are interested in top shelf–his is as good as it gets folks…”
