“The bigger issue of course is that the ability to afford cameras, lenses, flashes and camera housings, has far outpaced their owner’s ability to use them creatively, and sometimes even competently. Forget that they are uneducated. Forget that they haven’t “paid any dues.” Forget all that.” TexasFlycaster: Flyfishing Culture on the Skids
As a reflection upon how I vacillate between traditions and what…non-traditional, this fish porn business cuts both ways for me. Tattoo’d bums seemingly transported into the fly fishing world overnight, talk trash, have huge followings and aggravate the traditionalists. Way back, I took exception to the stick up their collective asses traditionalists and their arrogance. Yet, the bum mentality + new media grates because of the “paid any dues” issue. Envy on my part? Sure. But, also going in a new direction with out purposely hiking your leg would seem more tasteful. Civility is challenged. These abrupt swings create resentment.
For myself, I am what Texas Flycaster refers to as someone with more gear than brains…but, whatever. I enjoy the freedom to create and experiment. I am no commercial threat. I could be a culture threat. I do grow weary of fish held high to block a face like some frigging bandit. I know tatted up guys that look like they work at Miami Inked standing behind a fly shop counter. Yet one of the most gifted Steelhead fly fishers I know has the identical look…that keeps me in check. I hesitate, to judge. Bottom line, he does not hike his leg on traditions. He tries to bridge the gap, to teach. So, is that part of the problem? Lack of respect for the past; too much beatdown of the tweed crowd? I, of course, cannot be a hypocrite. I have highlighted tats, possess tats and occasionally insert skin into my postings. I do it without regard to a bigger cultural picture. My posting decisions assume adults can decide to come and go elsewhere. I like their input.
Is the fly fishing culture that fractured? Is it fractured on enviro issues like habitat, water quality, fish runs? For all the varied images within the culture, the core principles of stewardship bind us. For that the uneducated and educated can be thankful.

I will…sorry!

Hey Nutty,
Thanks for the note, great to hear from you again. Seems like you have your facts backwards. Correct me if I am wrong, but in your post below it seems you attack me neither to my face or by name. Feel free to follow your own hypocritical advice of saying things to people directly.
My company and blog is about our customers. Me getting in a below the knee picture contest with you is not necessary. But feel free to peruse http://www.marinatedinawesomeness.com and see anglers having plenty of success and enjoying their time on the river with our commercially tied flies. They wuld be happy to get in a below the knee contest with them you. Be careful you just might find yourself on the short end.
I quote you: “or better yet why dont we just go fishing ,or will you be to intimidated ,to fish with a guy who ties his own flys and has done it all by himself and never gone out of his way to ruin anyone else’s cred?”
1. Not intimidated to fish with you I just chose not to.
2. Another hypocritical statement. You have gone well out of your way to try and ruin my credibility.
3. You seem to have a problem with commercially tied flies. There are a lot of people that actually have jobs. i.e. work for a living. These anglers may not have the kind of time on their hands that you do to tie flies. They are happy to be able to get product that makes them awesome! Are you against working people recreating on the river and being awesome?
I have never met you, don’t know who you are or what you look like so would be kind of hard to stare you down. Perhaps you have me confused with someone else staring you down.
Keep the posts coming my friends and customers need the entertainment.
Thanks
Zach

Hey Nutty,
Didn’t you just learn to steelhead after arriving from New Jersey like 2 years ago? Perhaps still learning. Yeah you are right I only catch steelhead when guided. But usually only when I am guided by Jimbo. http://idylwilde.com/wordpress/2010/05/wheres-jimbo/

Here is my point ,
No matter where you go in life there will be assholes. I’ve found the owners of a lot of flyshops in the area to be just that! They don’t have tattoos, they just have the I know it all attitudes. Which for me as a customer is a turn off. I have no need to show off my tattoos or look mean. I have most of my tattoos because of pain, suffering or something that has happened to me in life. They are my life story. Some people get them to be cool or look hard ass. Some guides in the industry that work in shops may have them. Most of the people I know who have tattoos who fish are good people, I say most. I dont like hero shot either! It is high time that some people learned to respect the fish. I know a web site on the east coast that is all about the fish porn and throw the fish in front of the camera to make it look bigger then it is. Hell my tattoos have made it hard for me to get a job. It is a life choice some of us make. Most of us are people who can’t stand the way society has become. Filled with greed, hate, lust and backstabbing. Oh and talking about people behind there back (real big here in the northwest!).
Honestly Id like to see a change. Magazines like the Drake are pushing the hero shots and hero worship. We are fishermen and women. There is no place for the sexism in the industry. There are a bunch of ladies that can out fish a lot of these so called heroes of fly fishing. People have been bashing each other like a bunch of kindergarten kids as of late .The whole thing makes me sick .It makes you wonder why we cant get anything done for the fish doesnt it ?

Your defense of tattoos is admirable, but it is way more than about ink. You know my position on that. I wrote this post from three perspectives, which has lead to confusion I imagine, but generated some thoughts too. I wanted to high light the intolerance by traditionalists toward the new genre; mention the purposeful fuck you attitude by the beat down, piss on you culture, who just happen to be often heavily tatted; and reference the common, admirable goal of focusing upon the fish. Mike N. mentioned scrapping it all and starting over toward a common purpose. This is the core kernel of divide. Traditions scrapped and something new proposed. The old feel traditions are not respected and the new feel so much creativity lays before them to promote the sport, that traditions will have to catch up as the market place adapts.
Obviously, if one studies fly fishing, one sees the traditions are a varied mix of techniques. The traditions, I believe, are not about techniques, but about attitude. Not arrogance; but, rather civility, character, respect, tone, bearing. It is not about how we look, but how we treat each other. Mike is correct. Many of us on the waters or in front of or behind the counter are less than kind. I feel it all comes down to ego or pride. I have watched this play out as resistance is displayed to new techniques or equipment. A civil discussion re the new vs. present is not maintained. Rather the discussion devolves into smearing or ignoring the messenger. The messenger, out of frustration disparages the resistant one….it is all sensed and the pride and egos rise to the surface. Conversations change from specifics about a trend to generalities about how people look or live.
Lost in all this is all the participants at one time seemed to love the sport and carry themselves with a happiness and civility. Weary shop owners trying to make a living don’t make a pretense of goodwill. Employees need to flex their creds to prove their worth. Customers unnecessarily try to prove theirselves to overcome the perceived ego behind the counter. What a waste of time and goodwill. Of course, not all shop owners or customers are this way…thank goodness.
This sport has a culture, a tradition that is a mix of forces, like our society. It is a reflection of our society…for good and bad. My propensity is to turn away from the arrogance, egos, promotions, posturing and to retreat to the solitude of the sport. We can do that in this endeavor. Those that promote the sports growth, try to make money, have political agendas, have a cultural agenda will continue to fuel the divide. Civility is suffering. I don’t mean to add to it. This is a respite from much of the political/social forces, which provoke strong feeling within me. Here, I want to separate myself from those forces, yet they intrude. I read a posting at The Urban Angler where club members and wardens were subjected to threats and insults by thugs and non-traditionalists/non-stewards. Episodes like referenced to in the piece, only fuel the divide.
Read these two pieces by a female with an enormous ego…note the tone surrounding what is probably worthy views/advice (I like her gear to fly advice)…but note the tone and arrogance…http://www.thefishingoddess.com/FlyfishingEvolving.htm and here http://www.thefishingoddess.com/FlyReality_page.htm Having an opinion these days can appear uncivil or arrogant…having a view while swinging a machete is the problem. Someone needs to let some of the hot air out.
As Chris (P of T’s) said…whatever…just do your own thing. Follow the Golden Rule.

And the point is? I have tattoos and they are visable. I am husky and look intimidating as hell, but my knowledge and my courtesy help all those rednecks look past the obvious and find what they were not expecting. I have a fly shop. I know how the tourists look at me when they come in to get a day license, but in just a few minutes they are as friendly as can be, and they invite me to go along. Now just cause you are young and have tattos does not make you an outcaster. Hell, I don’t always use the right fly either..I just use what I want. I have a hobby…I do it my way.

Wow man ,
I hear you about us tattooed freaks ,i guess you need to start looking beyound the skin and meet the people . I now who you are speaking about behind the counter and he is a good guy .I for one try to respect people on the river evn though more and more i see people disrespecting me.
This last week a certain fly company went at Jim teeny for no reason ,we not all agree with Jim but there is no reason to make him look like some hillbilly with no brain .Did a tattooed guy make the video and post it ,no it was a northwest trendy guy who couldnt hook steelhead without a guide in the first place !That is where the industry is headed .It has become full of arrogant people with no respect for others .I have more tattoos by the way then most of the guys behind those counters and I’ll tell you right now most of those guys are pretty down to earth ! If the old farts would learn to look beyound the outside and meet people we might be better off . I say throw tradtion out the door and start over ! Stop judging ,treating others as if they are not humans and respect others .Stop beating others down because they fish with an indicator or nymph fish and get out there and fight for the fish ! Seriously I dont like seeing fish hoisted out of the water either unless they are hatchery fish and getting taken home to eat .I know of a picture of someone real close to you with a 28 ” trout ssitting high out of the water .Seriously think before you right and lets start talking about being more positive things in fly fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Good points Mike….to clarify…I am not opposed to trophy shots of fish be it my kids or yours. I am well aware of stressors to fish for such a shot and it has always been well considered before such a shot given the fight and appearance of the fish. My remark with the fish bandit comment is the shot that is purposely held so high to cover the face…the purpose escapes me. Highlighting the fish? Hell if I know…again…it draws to the angler albeit he is hiding….and less the fish. The fisherman is not neutral anymore…he is self absorbed, theatrical and competing. Makes no sense…I know…I am sharing impressions, perceptions, impulses..and of course, I am open to it all. Oh, I do think before I write. The beauty of the blog is I don’t have to be perfect. I can write what I wish and learn in the process via the responses….like yours.
