Very nice tutorial by Philip Bailey (Yorkshire) at FlyFishWithMe re the L’Ombra (Shadow) pattern. Nice pics to aid in the fly’s creation and how the hook is presented vertically as opposed to horizontally or perhaps diagonally (emergers). The L’Ombra, here, is tied on a Partridge hook. Also, of interest is an ‘umbrella hook‘ reportedly available at Swede’s Fly Shop (Spokane, Wa.) that appears to be suitable for this same vertical presentation.

Thanks for posting this! I am a pretty good angler, and have started tying my own flies. I have been looking around for some blogs on fly tying and this is one of the first I have found. Right now I am trying to start up a blog on fishing, and looking for some more traffic. I would much appreciate it if you could check it out and leave a comment. Advice on ideas for posts, or more websites for fly tying would be great!

Switters,
I stopped by Swede’s while visiting Washington this last summer. We spent two days in Spokane, that guy has quite the shop, some unique materials from feathers to hooks and some of the best dubbings I’ve seen. I know I loaded up on a few things and flew them home, this pattern has me thinking of rainbows sipping midges. This will be tied and prepped for my winter season! Thanks for posting it, good sh*t as always.

Sounds interesting to visit someday. If you are ever in Portland, make an effort to visit River City Fly Shop (Don Nelson). Mind boggling assortment of tying materials. Not sure where he gets it all or how he has the time.
