My son, Tony, took this photo this past week at Triangle Lake (Oregon). The beautiful bug was crawling across a stump when he captured the showy backside. If anyone knows what the name of this beautiful bug is let me know. It was approx. 3/4″ long. Joshua Bergan provided the answer! The ‘golden buprestid beetle’.

This is the “golden buprestid,” Cypriacis aurulenta. This is a relatively common beetle in the Pacific Northwest. They live in dead and dying conifers. It’s reproted that the larvae may bore in a tree for decades (the reported record is 51 years) before emerging as adults like this one.
