Pet owners have a sense of the disposition of their pets via their expressions and body language. Above, Penny the Cat had just been awakened from a deep sleep. Normally that cock eyed look coupled with a twitching tail is a certain tip off to not move toward her. Heck, she will move toward you! In this instance she was more dazed than aggressive. Cats have definite cues just like dogs have signals as to their mindset. The Arizona Humane Society has a nice series of links about pet ownership and behavioral signals. We have considered getting a dog. but we travel too much.

Yes that is a serious consideration if there is no back to pet-sit while you are away. Boarding the pet in a kennel is done by some but we have never tried that….we are fortunate to have a backup in place should we be able to escape.
