Understanding fly tying thread diameters – denier, aughts, resistance and lady’s tights

it would be a real pleasure if all the manufacturers would sit down and determine a COMMON measurement for thread. within each manufacturer’s product line the “aughts” or denier are valid measurements but bob’s thread may vary from gene’s even using the “common” denier scale. flat thread and twisted fibers will have some variance as well.
i’ve been looking for an substitute for ultra thread and happened upon guterman’s bulky nylon. it’s unwaxed and about 140 denier or six aught/ six zero/ six O and six bucks for a thousand meters or 1094 yards.
