How do you plan your photographic exploits? For me, usually, it has centered around two ‘plans’: a vacation/outing that is going to provide some opportunities and haphazard driving around town and seeing an opportunity. One is planned around the trip and the other is random and maybe I have my camera along.
As of tomorrow, I will be gainfully unemployed (‘retired’). So, some time slots in my daily routine are opening up. I have a yearning to plan more and not just where I am going, but maybe on what I would like to start looking for to photograph. The surprise opportunity is nice. But, what am I missing by not giving a little more thought to the where and what of it all?
Urban decay, rural, old, worn, natural, contrasts, angles, rock formations, clouds, color, black & white, trees, flowers, rust, steel, decay, the what, when, why, how, where of it all (history). I notice I am not drawn often to new lines, urban construction & growth and shiny. Some planning is in order to take me there and then let my imagination and eye collect the possibilities. Oh, I think I will also have an opportunity to throw a line more often too!

good on you!
retirement was my chosen occupation. i started working at twelve and retired in my late forties.
work continually interfered with my play and being an acolyte in the Church of Least Effort…well, work was work.
i can honestly say that in the decade plus of “gainful unemployment” i’ve not experienced more than a few micro-seconds of boredom.
i hope yours is as gratifying.
your post started out speaking to planning, serendipity and photography.
how do you shoot…is expeditionary photography your preferred method (for a lot of folks it is) ?

Thanks Craig! I cannot say if it is expeditionary….probably if by that you mean the effort centers around the camera then no. I have always been backpacking, camping and fishing and had a camera along just because and only occasionally took the camera in hand and thought let’s go see what I can find to shoot. I want to do more of that. I think I have been evolving toward that more and looking about more beyond the immediate task before me. What ever I have done has been intuitive and random for the most part. I don’t want to over think the process and get bogged down in the how to’s of it all, but at the same time I am a bit lazy that way and might do better to give it some study.
Thanks for the well wishes.

The lower D sounds perfect. The departure was planned for late Spring…the costs have been mounting so they facilitated my earlier departure.
