Carl Sandburg once said, “Goats are friendly. You can talk with them. A cow doesn’t know what you are saying. But these goats come up very quietly and brush against you, as if to say, Isn’t life good?”
Photographer KHammond captured the oldest goat on the family farm, in Missouri, named Charlie and shared it with SwittersB
Carl Sandburg and his wife Paula raised varieties of goats on their family farm. Sandburg spent the last two decades of his life on the farm and completed a large portion of his works while living there. Below is a photo from Life Magazine (Feb. 31, 1938 issue) showing Carl Sandburg and is daughter Helga singing to goats inside their farm house. Goats might have endearing qualities.

We had goats on the farm in Ireland where i grew up, great companions for people and for cows and sheep, great for eating weeds and little devils when it came to my grandmother’s geraniums – she had a friendly running battle with them.

John, I had but one run in with a goat some 45 years ago while visiting a farm…I exited a truck. Locked the doors. Walked toward the farm house only to be met by a goat. It was immediately evident to me that goat fancied himself a watch goat. It chased me around that truck until I was able to make a move to climb the side rails and there I was perched above the goat. Then the farm gal came outside, rescued me and that is my one and only goat story! 🙂
