At this point, this young woman was about 20′ above the ground. She continued up another 30′ or so up this vertical shaft, of sorts. Her father scurried up the wall, as if nothing, and continued on much higher. I have trouble negotiating a step ladder, So, I admire free climbing.
This week, a young man fell 150′ to his death at Rocky Butte near my home. Every few years, a climber dies on the North side of Rocky Butte.

Great capture of the girl! ~Sherry

Fab shot, that captures her determination so well! I think it pretty foolhardy too.

With my dizziness I could not stand at the bottom of these rocks and look up. Sad to hear of someone falling, but sometimes I think they tempt fate and this is the outcome.

climbing up mountains, cliffs, buttes and anything made of rocks that slip and slide, even slightly upward tilting cow-paths are not to be trodden by myself… sad so many meet their end this way but i guess it is part of the thrill perhaps? something I will certainly never know…

Nor I! Thrill seeking, skill driven types have different wiring. I would say I will just ‘go along for the ride’ but I have a friend that is a true ‘race car driver’ and I would never ride along with him unless I wore Depends! 🙂

Free climbing has always seemed superhuman to me. Seeing a person hanging off the side of a cliff face by notches in the rock that are literally centimeters just gives me shivers. I admire it, but I always wondered what the sobering reality of that was as well. Your pictures always tell such a rich story.

Thank you Darryl.Totally agree…well beyond my comprehension of anyone that free climbs (probably any climbing), bungee jumping, hang gliding, etc.
