I had one. It did a great job. That’s why most basements had two sinks — first and second rinse. Used way less power and water than today’s. The only advantage for automatic is that you didn’t have to stand there and do the work. For some reason that didn’t bother me. Then hang on clothesline in basement and iron practically everything. I guess I was cut out for that work in those days.
Great comment! Clotheslines in the basement…yes! And, outside too. Everything ironed. My Mom couldn’t get an extension for the phone in hte basement….and she loved to talk on the phone….hence, I am sure, she talked my Dad into one of those new agitator + spin cycle washers. Eventually, the dryer came too.
Oh this takes me back to some very vivid childhood memories. When i was a small child i was ‘helping’ my Mom do the laundry with such a washer. My ponytail got caught in the wringer and was pulling my head closer and closer to the machine. I can still hear the crash of my Mom slamming the emergency release on the wringer. Yikes!

Well you never know! I do think that growing up in a very rural and somewhat isolated spot left me very curious about the rest of the world.
