It is English Ivy…at one time, late 1800’s, a lot of Ivy was planted around Portland and nearby towns. It has, in some areas, taken over the habitat in nearby forests. Crews are sent out to remove the ivy tenaciously growing up fir, alders and maple trees. There is a long abandoned saw mill town up the Columbia River Gorge, near Bridal Veil…the structures are gone, but the ivy planted in the 1800’s is everywhere, up every fir tree and 3′ thick on the forest floor. This ivy in the photo was along a home’s embankment near that barely visible sidewalk.
