if you can find plat maps you can follow ownership and land division over time
i’ve been amazed at what turned up when i’ve looked
while you are at it survey, topo and political maps can provide a lot of insight, as well
for instance a friend of a friend had a basement turn into a spring
150+ years ago there was a creek, then a diversion, then a huge drain about 70 years ago and fifteen years ago the drain collapsed and the creek reestablished its flow…through this fellow’s basement
a developer now would have left a greenspace to mitigate historical but then…
anyway, a couple hours on the internet i found out more about that piece of dirt than i’s ever imagined
