REVERSE HACKLING CONCEPT~TENKARA’S SAKASA-KEBARI
The ever creative Anthony Naples at Casting Around has had an infatuation the Tenkara fishing concept. One of the techniques in tying Tenkara flies is the wrapping the hackle wing so that it slopes forward over the eye (sakasa-kebari). In this piece, Anthony has combined the reverse hackle with that daunting tiny fly (let’s see how many flies we can put on a penny/dime?) style. This is an interesting concept for tiny flies in the film. Study the ideas and note that Anthony highligted another tier that has also combined the reverse hackling and small hooks. My name ｉｓ Ierou Minamifuji from Japan. I am fishing with Tenkara fly fishing method in Japan. I am interested in your discussion of Sakasa on newwark. I can not speak good English so please allow my funny and misunderstandable English.
As you mentioned, it is nice style that you have the decision on western or tenkara depends on wind, place, steam size, season. Follow wind will be much easier on the dry fly of Tenkara, the against wind will be difficult so we will take hevey sakasa inside led wire-weight. You can choice western or tenkara but I have choice the fly, standing point, casting point, stream, line and casting method and also times. So I think Tenkara is vary simple and low cost system but the method fairely needs technic like Ninjya. So I call Ninjya Fly Fishing for Western people. Also I can not do Western FF but I am trying the mix from Western FF for long time. It is similar to your situation. Because I use dry , wet, hevey and reel for tenkara rod modification depend on TPO.

I fished with a friend for brown trout and steelhead in the late fall near Rochester NY.
He swears by reverse hackling. And he showed me a few of the flies he tied…then he showed me it works. There were 7 guys fishing a long hole. He took three steelhead and four browns and only one other guy caught a fish (me).

Let me ask you by way of fly design and presentation: do you tie Tenkara patterns and fish standard gear or tie and fish Tenkara, or a mix?

Currently I’m fishing a lot with the tenkara rod, but with a mix of both your usual western style patterns and more traditional tenkara patterns. I usually take my tenkara rod and standard rod along and I’ll decide based on stream/weather conditions what to do. If the water’s high or it’s really windy I’ll opt for the western gear.
You could use the tenkara rod in high water with a lot of weight – but that is not really its strong suit.
With me the whole tenkara thing is about fun and trying something different rather than an attitude that it is better than western style fly fishing (which is a silly point I think).
