What is this pattern? It is normally tied in a size 8-10 or so. What could it be used for? It is highly thought of on special Oregon rivers. Caddis, Big Mayfly, Stonefly, Stillwater Dragon? The name must be an interesting story?
It must be a pretty good fly if worthy of a drawing by Jeff Kennedy

Have used the PossE Bugger originally on the McKenzie, then Washington in the Cascades, had a lot of success in streams and lakes alike in Alaska. Right now it has been successful on pulling native brook trout out of the most overfished and tiny creeks in southern california (Santa Ana river by Big Bear) 3 days after 4th of July. In my opinion one of the best flies ever produced( not the prettiest, but god it works well every where I have been). Looking forward to seeing what it has to show me next time I am in Ohio. Good luck and tight lines, especially to all those on the emerald river.

Chris…how bizarre…10 seconds after posting must have nymphs, and the Possie Bugger being one of them, you posted.

This is a summer standard for me on the truckee here in reno– I like it in the bigger 8-10 sizes for sure. I have no idea why it works other than it’s an effective attractor that, in my mind, is half woolly bugger & half bead head nymph. I usually tie them on as the lead fly and find that most my takes happen in the transition between dead drift and swing, much like a lot of streamer takes.
My guess as to it’s effectiveness is that fish looking for cased or emerging caddis might take it for these but I also have to guess that the bigger ones create a territorial strike as well. But, again, those are just guesses.

Good guesses. The territorial strike isn’t often mentioned beyond bigger fish. I have wondered if smaller fish, say a 13″ ‘bow, strike territorially like a steelhead, salmon, big brown or a pike?

posse buggers are the shiznit! I swapped some flies with Matt Stansberry and he hooked me up with a few. They work great in MN waters too. I need to tie some more of these badboys up!

So JP, what do you believe they imitate? Fairly specific or a grouping? The OFFB men seem to most often mention Caddis when fishing the McKenzie R. with the Posse Bugger. Just curious here as it seems to simulate many possibilities. A veritable Smörgåsbord, I think.

I believe it is more of an attractor type pattern, but it works as an awful deadly caddis nymph
